Day Trip to Whitetop Mountain, VA

Whitetop Mountain, standing as the second highest peak in Virginia, offers breathtaking views and a unique adventure for those willing to brave its heights. On a crisp day with temperatures hovering around 18 degrees and a biting 30 mph wind, our trip to the summit was nothing short of exhilarating.

Getting There

The journey began early in the morning as we made our way to the highest road in Virginia, which leads directly to the top of Whitetop. The winding roads offered glimpses of the stunning landscape, with patches of snow still clinging to the ground, remnants of the winter chill. The excitement built as we drew closer to our destination, knowing we were about to experience one of the most remarkable views in the state.

At the Summit

Upon reaching the summit, we were greeted by a frigid breeze that whipped around us, making the 18-degree temperature feel even colder. However, the stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys were worth every shiver. The stark beauty of the landscape, with its rolling hills and distant peaks, provided a perfect backdrop for experimenting with my new camera and lens.

Photography Adventure

With the wind howling, I took the opportunity to test out my new equipment, a Leica SL2 and a Apo Summicron SL 35mm f/2. The camera and lens performed flawlessly in the frigid cold and I was able to operate it, suprisingly, with large winter gloves! The challenge of capturing the beauty of Whitetop Mountain in such conditions was thrilling. I experimented with different settings, trying to find the right balance between exposure and the effects of the wind. The sharp, clear air made for vibrant colors and striking contrasts in the photos, showcasing the rugged terrain and the vast sky above.

Kate's Bold Venture

In a surprising turn of events, Kate decided to venture out and brave the elements. Bundled up against the cold, she joined me in exploring the summit. Her enthusiasm and adventurous spirit added a spark to the day, as we both navigated the rocky terrain, taking in the breathtaking views and snapping pictures along the way.

Conclusion

Our day trip to Whitetop Mountain was a memorable experience filled with adventure, photography, and the beauty of nature. Despite the cold and wind, the journey was invigorating, and the stunning vistas made it all worthwhile. With new memories captured through my camera lens and most importantly, the joy of sharing the experience with Kate, this trip to Virginia's second highest mountain will be cherished for years to come.

Enjoy the photographs..........
